While on a scout captured, single-handedly, 2 desperate Confederate guerrilla officers who were together. They were more heavily armed than he, but he was able to capture them and hold them until he could get back to his unit.

Originally buried in Pasco Cemetery, on February 16, 2000 his remains were reburied with full military honors at the state's only national cemetery. This event marked the first time a Civil War veteran or a Medal of Honor recipient has been interred there.
