With a small command, defeated an overwhelming force of the enemy and saved the entire ordnance and supply trains of the Fifteenth, Sixteenth, Seventeenth and Twentieth Corps.

Note: He was promoted to Brigadier General on July 30, 1862 and ended the war as a Brevet Major General. He passed away before his award was issued.
